Up until the end of the 1960's, the world of high precision timekeeping for the wrist was completely dominated by the mechanical watches from Switzerland. One of the tools, which kept the Swiss manufacturers on their toes, were competitions at the national astronomical observatories in Geneva and Neuchâtel. These competitions were originally intended to start in 1940, but was delayed for six years by WW-II. The most prestigious awards were considered to be that of gentlemen's wristwatch movements with a maximum diameter of 30.00mm.
It is interesting to note that Omega launced their famous '30mm' family of manual wind movements near the end of the 1930's, just in time for the originally planned start of the competitions. Also of interest is the fact that in the 1946 - 1960 timeframe (for which we have data), Omega completely dominated these competitons. Since there were competitions at both observatories, there was a total of 30 first, second and third places to be had in the 15 year timespan.
The statistics tells the story. Omega: 10 first places, 19 seconds and 10 third places.
Patek Philippe: 8-3-7, Zenith: 6-4-8, Movado: 3-2-2, Longines: 2-1-1, Rolex: 1-0-1 and finally Ulysse Nardin: 0-1-1.
Geneva Observatory; best series of five movements seen all year:
Omega: 9, Patek Philippe: 5 (Results missing for 1946.)
Neuchâtel Observatory; best series of four movements seen all year:
Omega: 5, Zenith: 6(!), Longines: 2, Movado: 2.
No other brand scored even once.
The movements Omega used to such devastating effect against the Zenith caliber 135 and the other competitors were their deluxe competition chronometer grade calibers, 30T2Rg and 30T2SCRg, also known as caliber 262 and 282. Thus no matter what the ads may say or who one asks, at the end of the day it is impossible to find any other watch movement in the world with the same level of proven accuracy and pedigree.
This particular specimen of these famous watches sports the following features:
- Positional compensated Breguet overcoil hairspring.
- Split bimetallic temperature compensated balance, system Guillaume.
- High precision chronometer grade regulator, system Omega.
- Baseplate engraved with caliber, 30 T2 Rg, below balance.
- Original steel blue seconds hand.
- Near immaculate 'Swiss Made' original chronometer style dial. Only sign of age is a slight and even layer of oxidation on the roman numerals.
- Original solid gold leaf hands of the correct length.
- Crown and crown stem are not original. The ones, which were on the watch when it reached us, were of an incorrect type for the caliber. This carried a risk of damaging the movement if allowed to stay. The crown is an original Omega replacement part, just like the new stem, which was the closest we could come to the original illustrations of these watches.
- We have also replaced the Hesalite crystal with an original and correct Omega replacement, which Omega - surprisingly enough - was still able to supply to us. The one on the watch as we got it was an off-brand replacement.
- We have not attempted to polish the fine patina of inevitable scratches in the soft solid 18 carat gold case. The photographs are deliberately exposed to try and exaggerate the effect. There are a few fine scratches from case openers, including a pair on the rear of the lug at 11 o'clock.
- The caseback has a dedication engraving: "Für 10 Jahre treue mitarbeit / Hamol A-G / 1946", which roughly translates to 'For 10 years of dedicated service / Hamol Inc. / 1946'. According to Omega Vintage Information, then this very watch was delivered on July 6th, 1945, to the American PX forces in Germany of all places. Yes, that does indeed mean before the end of WW-II in the pacific region. The PX forces are of course the supply troops of the American occupational forces. How this watch ended up as a gift to an employee of Hamol, apparently a Swiss medical corporation, is left as an exercise for the reader.
- Omega has also confirmed that this watch was originally supplied with this style of dial, the most popular and sought after option for obvious reasons. Omega supplied the 30T2Rg and 30T2SCRg equipped watches with a large number of options when it came to dials. Originally there were at least four different styles of dial designs offered for these watches.
Since the official production figures for all caliber 30T2Rg's and 30T2SCRg's are between zero(!) and a few thousand, it probably comes as no surprise that the 'chronometer style' dials are in high demand. This to a point, where redials and later reproductions seems to be more the norm rather than the exception, when you do find one of these watches up for sale today.
- Perhaps even more surprising is the fact that this watch still has its original high quality chronometer grade balance assembly. These movements were designed with the goal of maximum precision, and one of the features, which was left at the wayside to meet this goal, was shock protection. As a result it wasn't unusual for the balance staff to break, rendering the watch useless. Fortunately Omega did supply a special chronometer grade complete balance assembly. Unfortunately that particular spare part is not similar to the original, being a simple spring compensated solid ring Glycydur balance, thus giving a significantly different optical impression of the movement if fitted.
Even more astonishing is the fact that this particular movements keeps exceptional time. As usual we will not make any guarantees toward the accuracy of vintage chronometers. Yet after we gave the movement a complete service and regulation, then this specimen actually might stand a fighting chance of passing COSC certification today, 61 years after it left Omega.
- If at all possible then we encourage any interested parties to visit our shop and inspect this watch in person. Our photographer is still agonizing his self-proclaimed inability to bring out the true beauty of this watch.

A rare bird indeed with a strange background story. In 1948 Omega introduced the Seamaster as the first signature name for a line of Omega models. The Seamaster watches quickly became a huge success and plans were made to introduce other 'themed' groupings.
The Seamaster models were the first Omega line of watches with an emphasis on protecting the dial and the movement from the elements. The watches from back then were not really waterproof as we would understand it, but they did have proper gaskets and seals in place.
For the next signature line to be introduced in 1952 Omega wanted a top quality series, emphasizing luxury and high precision timekeeping. The first name choosen was 'Globemaster', but it was soon discovered that this would interfere with a trademarked name for an aircraft by Boeing. Yet it was too late to stop the early ads from using the name. Due to the naming confusion, the new chronometer certified luxury models with the new case and dial style were simply shipped without a name printed on the dial. These watches were shown nameless in the Globemaster print ads (of which we have an original specimen at hand).
Eventually Omega decided on the name 'Constellation'(!) for the new models, which quite ironically also was the name of an airplane, this time by Lockheed.
While Omega HQ in Switzerland never shipped any Swiss Made watches carrying the Globemaster name, it wasn't entirely forgotten. In the fifties and early sixties Omega shipped raw movements, Ie. without a case, to the United States. This was done to circumvent a stiff import tax, which was in effect at the time in a vain attempt at protecting the failing US watch industy from the Swiss watch giants in particular. The US importer, Norman Morris, then combined the Omega movements with US made cases and dials and sold the watches under the Omega name.
For some reason the Globemaster name was used on at least a few production runs in the US in the late fifties. This watch is one variant of at least two we are aware of, which carries it. So while this is not a Swiss Made Omega, it was sold in the US with the blessing of Omega Switzerland. Thus being one of the exceptionally rare specimens of the Omega Globemaster genus.
Unfortunately the condition of the dial and case on this watch isn't terribly great, and the price has been set accordingly. The dial is scratched and dented at one location, and two of the hourmarkers have been replaced at some point.
